  • The Penny

I used to collect a lot of pennies from my readers and donate them a worthy cause at the year's end. However, until there is a clear solution to prevent PayPal from taking half the donations, this feature is down. Keep the pennies in a jar. ;)

Common Cents

While in what I believe to be the greatest city in the world, New York City, I stumbled along the largest collection of pennies on earth. Believe it when I say it was quite a sight–the cool, clear winter sky reflected off the copper currency, illuminating at least three city blocks. It was absolutely spectacular to say the least. But why all the pennies? You ask. Common Cents, that’s why.

Common Cents is the not-for-profit organization behind the Penny Harvest, a philanthropy project dedicated to creating change by collecting it; just like PennyForAThough.org, but more successful. Seriously though, the Penny Harvest is quite a phenomenon. In fact, New York City children have collected approximately 100 million pennies, which–at the year’s end–will be disbursed to community projects in need of change, literally. Now we’re talking!!!

P.S. Who’s going to roll all them pennies up?

  1. It would be awesome if they built in a sensitive truck scale underneath which could get close to measuring every increment of, say… 5 lbs? I’d bet 1lb of pennies is close to $1.

They could have a real-time tally of how much money is in there!!!!!
