The Penny
I used to collect a lot of pennies from my readers and donate them a worthy cause at the year's end. However, until there is a clear solution to prevent PayPal from taking half the donations, this feature is down. Keep the pennies in a jar. ;)
The Thought
"The harder I work, the luckier I get."
- J.P. Morgan
It’s so good that I don’t want to spend too much time blogging about it. So: saw some great art & music, reunited with old friends, went for a run on the lake-front, and met some cool agency folks.
Soon I’ll be en route to Cleveland for the 5th annual Marzullo Family Fall Fiesta… This is the first time I’ve been able to make it… Jazzed!
If you appreciate good, trendy Rock & Roll inspired by southern roots you’ll love Kings of Leon. The trio of brothers (plus a cousin) totally rocked a sold out Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall last night in Portland. The energy was exhilarating and the venue’s sound quality was impeccable.
Five sound hours of sleep later and I’m on a plane en route to Chicagoland… This is how we keeps it exciting.
Oh, and I’m further convinced that Southwest is the best domestic airline… On time + two carry-ons for free + new free premium snack selection + comedic attendants = a happy me!
Oh Woot, you so tricky Woot.com… So, so, soo tricky. This morning I “mistakenly” received an email from one of my favorite deal-a-day websites, Woot.com. The subject and first body lines indicate that only Woot employees should’ve recieved the email, but somehow this lil’ ol’ consumer got mixed up in the employee contact list. Either Woot.com did this in an attempt to make news of tonight’s “Woot Off” go viral, or they have a really bad contact management system… Obviously the latter worked.
Another exciting weekend of live music and attempted athleticism. The Chaos began with Saturday’s Ghostland Observatory fiasco, then continued bright and early with the “Run Like Hell” half marathon and 10K… The race’s name was true to itself as I was truly in hell for the duration.
Confused about your decision in 08? I am! Probably because this is the first election I’ve genuinely paid close attention to. Adding to the confusion is the need for immediate and drastic change. The questions I’ve asked myself are: what are the changes needed and which candidate can make them happen flawlessly?
To me, yesterday was a turning point in the race for the presidency, as Former Secretary of State, Colin Powell, gave Senator Barack Obama his endorsement. I’m not saying everyone should make the decision Mr. Powell has. However, I do encourage people to check out Colin Powell’s statement on last night’s Meet the Press. Powell brings up some great, unbiased issues concerning and favoring both candidates.
Oregon’s most spectacular mountain absolutely owned me this morning… That’s the short story. Here’s the extended version: It was 2:30AM on Sunday when my alarm clock began to chirp. The “stoke” was high, so there was no need to hit snooze. Instead, I threw on my already laid-out clothes, devoured some already made oats, got into my already packed car, and scooped up my already waiting climbing buddy, Brian. One-point-five hours later we were parked at Timberline Lodge, the base of Mt. Hood, where we began our early morning adventure.
Several hours into our ascent up the 11,249 foot mountain things couldn’t have been better; the sky was clear, the temperature was hovering in the low 30s, and both of us were mentally and physically strong. Then (yes, here’s the then) the “clear” sky turned “not-so-clear.” Expecting the gray cloud to pass, Brian and I climbed on… To our dismay, the cloud never settled; in fact, the storm it carried grew stronger and visibility was a mere 20-30 feet at best. Adding to the difficulty was 3-inches of snow accumulation per hour. At 10,600 feet we were unable to find the standard route and were desperate to summit, so we decided to be ambitious and scale the final 800 feet of near-vertical ice and snow in front of us. A few hundred feet into the attempt we decided to do the smart/safe thing and started our descent before conditions worsened.
In the end, we were unsuccessful in making it to the top of Mt. Hood; however, I deem the mission a success as we stayed accident free and made it back to Portland in time for brunch, a nap, and an otherwise productive Sunday… Good fun!
It has been an exciting weekend, and to think, it’s not even noon on a Saturday. The fun began last night with a party at D Echo’s photography studio, Straub Collaborative, where The Helio Sequence rocked the faces off of a 200+ audience of Portland creative folk… It was ridiculous, Seriously! Between the music, kobe burgers, open bar, and solid cougar-to-me ratio, it was an epic event.
At some point during the night (actually it was morning I believe) Jay convinced me to run an early morning cross country race in SE Portland. Being so into running right now and one who’s always up for a good competition, I conceded to the pressure. Needless to be said, my 6+ minute miles didn’t compete with Jay’s 5-minute miles… Not surprised!
Next up is a plethora of work, the Oregon Bike Manifest, then an evening/Sunday morning ascent up Mt. Hood… Bananas!
The bad thing about fall in Portland is the rain. The good thing about this particular fall is that I have no reason to ride a bicycle since I’ve given up Cyclocross. It’s my longest bicycle vacation since I’ve been competitive, it’s refreshing to say the least. Hopefully it’ll make training for a stellar road season a lot easier. That said, I’ve had to find another way keep the heart rate up, running.
Honestly, running is much easier than cycling… At least in the rain and dark it is.
I’ve been in need of a spectacular experience for sometime now and am happy to say last night was just that, spectacular! It started off pretty typical – got home from work, went for a run, made some chow… Nothing too crazy. That is until I meandered down the hill and into the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall where Sigur Roswas waiting to rock me with their sweet, sweet Icelandic flavor. You can get a free taste of Sigur Ros here… Give it time!
I won’t go into too much detail, as it’s hard to articulate things which I don’t fully understand – like most of the lyrics. However, I will say that if there’s a heaven, I pray that Sigur Ros is playing on the elevator ride up there. In the end, last night’s show was absolutely bananas and ranks right up there with Daft Punk, Bjork, Radiohead and Rage.
Thanks goes to the nice man on Craigslist who traded me second row center seats for a Chiropractor gift certificate.
I hate to over-speculate, but tomorrow’s Sigur Ros show in Portland promises to be in my top five concert experiences… Somewhere in the mix with Radiohead, Daft Punk, Bjork, and Rage Against the Machine.
Miraculously, a lucky friend and I will be sitting 2nd row center… Whooo Whoooooooo!
Is there some truth in Parody? As funny, insulting, or empowering as it is – a great parody has some truth to it. Last night’s SNL parody of Thursday’s VP debate demonstrates just that… At least in my opinion.
Here’s how: Hope your child’s super cute, enable him/her to be uber funny, take a video, post it to the web, and wait. I’m not sure if that was the intention here, but I venture to guess this is not the last I see of this adorable child.
With Fall in Portland, OR comes rain, wind, and–for some–seasonal depression, but first we receive some of the most spectacular Fall sunrises in the country… Second only to Badlands, SD.
